What happened
A Cessna 525A corporate aircraft, registration YV2923, was operating a flight from Oscar Machado Zuloaga International Airport in Charallave to Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and eight passengers.
While cruising at FL400 near the KONSO waypoint, the crew activated the anti-ice system to prevent potential engine power loss. This activation triggered an amber advisory light indicating FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) degradation. In response to the warning, the pilot requested a descent to FL340 from Maiquetía Area Control Center. When the warning persisted, the pilot further requested a descent to FL200 to exit icing conditions.
Following established Quick Reference Handbook (QRH) procedures, the pilot cancelled the original destination and diverted to the nearest suitable airport, La Chinita International Airport in Maracaibo. The FADEC degradation indication cleared during the descent between FL220 and FL200. The aircraft landed safely with no injuries to the passengers or crew.
The investigation
The investigation examined the pilot's licenses, medical certifications, flight plans, and aircraft maintenance logs. Authorities also reviewed the records of the maintenance organization, AVIASERVICE, C.A., and inspected the aircraft's airworthiness and radio station licenses.
Investigators performed an engine run-up to check for power degradation; however, no issues were detected in the turbines during the test. The investigation also included a review of the aircraft's QRH procedures to verify that the pilot's actions were compliant with established protocols.
