What happened
On August 30, 2023, at approximately 18:20 UTC, a Piper PA-12 aircraft, registration LV-GJJ, was engaged in a general aviation training flight at the Villa General Belgrano Aerodrome in Córdoba, Argentina. During the takeoff phase of the operation, as the pilot initiated the engine run-up and prepared for departure, the aircraft veered toward the right. This loss of directional control caused the aircraft to leave the paved surface, resulting in a runway excursion.
While the aircraft sustained damage, there were no fatalities reported. One individual sustained minor injuries during the event.
The investigation
The investigation was conducted by the Dirección Nacional de Investigación de Sucesos Aeronáumenticos (DNISAE). The inquiry focused on a documentary review of the facts surrounding the takeoff maneuver and the aircraft's behavior during the engine start and taxi sequence. The investigation examined the operational context of the training flight and the technical circumstances that led to the aircraft departing the runway.
Findings
The investigation established that the primary cause of the excursion was the aircraft veering to the right during the takeoff roll. The investigation concluded that the findings did not contain significant elements that would necessitate new safety improvements or changes to national operational standards, leading to the administrative closure of the case.
