What happened
On October 31, 2024, at approximately 20:05 UTC, a Cessna 310R, registration LV-MMX, was performing a general aviation flight from Rosario (Islas Malvinas International Airport) to Mar del Plata (Astor Piazzolla International Airport). After a flight duration of 2.4 hours, the aircraft approached runway 13 under visual meteorological conditions.
During the landing roll, the aircraft experienced a failure of the right main landing gear. This mechanical malfunction caused the aircraft to deviate from the runway centerline and veer toward the right side of the runway. The aircraft traveled approximately 10/0 meters beyond the paved surface before coming to a stop on the grass. All five occupants, including the pilot-in-command, evacuated the aircraft safely without injuries.
The investigation
The Argentine Transportation Safety Board (JST) initiated an investigation into the event, focusing on the mechanical failure of the landing gear. The investigation examined the aircraft's maintenance history, noting that the airworthiness certificate was valid and maintenance documentation was current. The investigation also analyzed the impact of the failure on the aircraft's structure, as the excursion resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage, the horizontal stabilizer, the right main gear, and the propeller of the number two engine.
