What happened
On December 12, 2024, at approximately 21:50 UTC, an Air Tractor AT502B aircraft, registration LV-WZX, experienced a loss of control during the takeoff phase of an agricultural flight. The aircraft was performing specialized aerial application operations near the intersection of RP 30 and RP 227 in Lobería, Buenos Aires province. Following the loss of control, the aircraft impacted the ground, resulting in the destruction of the airframe. The pilot on board sustained minor injuries and was able to escape the wreckage.
The investigation
The Argentine Transportation Safety Board (JST) initiated an investigation into the accident to determine the sequence of events and contributing factors. Investigators focused on the aircraft's performance and control parameters during the critical takeoff phase. A key area of examination involves the meteorological conditions at the time of the event, specifically looking at how the aircraft responded to wind conditions.
Findings
- The aircraft was engaged in specialized agricultural spraying operations.
- The accident occurred during the takeoff phase of flight.
- Crosswind correction is a primary factor under investigation, as authorities are examining whether the aircraft was affected by a lateral wind component that may have induced the loss of control.
- At the time of the incident, surface winds were recorded at 11 knots from 20 degrees.
