What happened
On the morning of the incident, a three-engine float plane departed from Bergen harbor at 0630 local time. The aircraft was en route to Tromsø when the crew reported their position at 0654 local time. At that moment, the estimated altitude was between 3,000 and 5,000 feet. Six minutes later, while navigating through clouds during the cruise phase, the airplane struck the south face of Mt Lyhesten. The impact site was located approximately 4 kilometers west of Hyllestad. The collision resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. All seven occupants on board were killed in the accident.
Findings
The official investigation determined that the crash was caused by a controlled flight into terrain. The aircraft had deviated from its prescribed route by 15 to 20 kilometers while operating in marginal weather conditions.
