Incident
On 13 August 2025, at approximately 12:02 local time (10:02 UTC), a paraglider pilot involved in the Ozone Krushevo Open 2025 competition experienced a loss of control during takeoff from the east launch of the Meckin Kamen paragliding site near Krushevo, Republic of North Macedonia. According to GPS data, the pilot initiated takeoff at 12:00:12 heading east but with crossed lines. At 12:00:28, the pilot struck a parked Renault Traffic van in an adjacent parking lot, sustaining serious injuries. First aid was provided on site, and the pilot was subsequently transported by helicopter of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to a private clinic in Skopje.
Pilot and Equipment
The pilot was a 57-year-old Romanian national, holding a valid Ultralight Gliders Pilot Licence (number 010.2020, valid until 3 October 2025). He was described by fellow pilots as experienced and familiar with the Meckin Kamen site, having flown there on numerous occasions, including a 2-hour 21-minute flight the previous day. The paraglider involved was an Ozone Photon (EN-C class, Sport Class 2-Liner). The paraglider sustained no damage from the impact; any damage to the lines occurred during rescue extraction. A reserve parachute was present but not activated.
Meteorological Conditions
On the day of the incident, the region was under the influence of a high-pressure system, with stable, clear, and warm weather. at lower altitudes, weak variable winds were present, turning easterly at up to 10 knots below FL100 and southerly above. Organizers deemed the conditions favorable for the competition. The Meckin Kamen site does not have a certified weather station; only an informational station was available.
Investigation
The Committee for Investigation of Aviation Accidents and Serious Incidents of the Republic of North Macedonia conducted an investigation. The paraglider was found to have no pre-existing defects. The pilot had all required documentation for participation. The investigation noted that the pilot lost control during takeoff, resulting in the collision with a parked vehicle. No probable cause was stated in the report.
