What happened
During an arrival from Mexico City, the flight was performing an approach toward runway 23 at Hermosillo-General Ignacio Pesqueira Garcia Airport. While descending, air traffic control notified the crew regarding degraded visibility and adverse weather conditions in the area.
As the aircraft reached an altitude of 1,800 feet during its final approach, it collided with the slope of Mt El Bachoco. The impact occurred approximately 10.4 km before reaching the threshold of runway 23. The collision resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft and nine fatalities.
Findings
Investigations concluded that the accident was a result of controlled flight into terrain. This occurred because the crew did not adhere to the required minimum altitude of 2,800 feet during the approach phase. Additionally, the presence of poor weather and reduced visibility contributed to the circumstances leading to the crash.
