Landing gear failure leads to runway excursion

No fatalities • Toluca, Mexico • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a right main landing gear malfunction during its approach, resulting in a belly landing and subsequent excursion into a grassy area.

What happened

During the final stages of an otherwise routine flight, the flight crew began the landing configuration process. During this phase, it was discovered that the right main landing gear had failed to extend and remained trapped within the wheel well. Despite this mechanical issue, the crew proceeded with the approach to runway 15.

Upon touchdown, the aircraft made contact with the runway on its belly. The impact caused the right wing to strike the ground surface. Following the initial contact, the aircraft type slid for several hundred meters along the runway before veering toward the left side of the strip. The movement ended when the plane came to a stop in a nearby grassy field.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair due to the structural impact of the belly landing.
  • All nine occupants on board were successfully rescued without reported injuries.

Probable cause

The right main landing gear failed to deploy from the wheel well during the landing configuration.
