What happened
An aircraft, which had been moved from Gomel to Kunovice for scheduled maintenance, was involved in a fatal accident during its arrival phase. While approaching Kunovice, the flight crew encountered adverse weather conditions, prompting a decision to divert the flight to Brno-Tuřany Airport. Upon arriving at the secondary destination, the crew found that meteorological conditions remained unfavorable.
Following two unsuccessful landing attempts, the crew initiated a third approach. During this final attempt, the aircraft struck the ground approximately 3.5 km from the runway threshold. At the moment of impact, the aircraft was in a configuration with the landing gear and flaps retracted. The collision resulted in the total destruction of the airframe and both pilots were killed.
Findings
Investigation into the accident highlighted that visibility at the time of the crash was severely restricted to only 50 metres because of dense fog.
