A cargo flight departing Bukavu-Kavumu Airport disappeared during transit to Kama, with wreckage later discovered in a remote region.

What happened

A twin-engine cargo flight departed from Bukav-Kavumu Airport at 13:42 local time, bound for Kama in the Maniema Province. The aircraft was transporting 1,500 kilograms of books and was occupied by two pilots and two passengers. Approximately ten minutes after takeoff, the crew adjusted their radio frequency, after which all communication with the aircraft ceased.

Following the failure of the flight to reach its destination, search and rescue operations were launched. Two helicopters operated by the same company conducted aerial searches and, two days after the disappearance, located the wreckage in the vicinity of Mulume Munene, situated roughly 30 km southwest of Bukavu. The impact and subsequent fire resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were four fatalities among the occupants.

Findings

The wreckage showed evidence of significant impact forces and a post-crash fire that destroyed the airframe.
