What happened
During the takeoff phase from Batagay Airport, an aircraft experienced simultaneous technical issues with both of its engines. While performing the initial climb, the crew found themselves unable to maintain necessary altitude due to these mechanical difficulties. In an effort to manage the situation, the pilot-in-command directed the plane toward a river located approximately one kilometer from the runway for an emergency descent.
As the aircraft approached the site, it struck trees before impact. The force of the crash caused the landing gear to separate from the airframe, and the plane eventually came to a stop within a forested region. Although the impact resulted in the total loss of the aircraft, there were no injuries among the five crew members on board.
Findings
Investigations into the accident revealed that the departure was rushed and lacked adequate pre-flight preparation. At the time of the incident, the outside air temperature was -48° C., which prevented the engine oil from reaching an appropriate operating temperature. This lack of warmth caused the engines to malfunction following rotation. Specifically, the propeller pitch became stuck between 20° and 30°, creating excessive drag that prevented the aircraft from climbing effectively.
