What happened
During the takeoff phase from Zyrianka Airport, an aircraft encountered significant mechanical difficulties shortly after departing the runway. While climbing to an altitude of approximately 20 meters, the left engine began experiencing technical issues. In an attempt to manage the failure, the crew attempted to feather the propeller; however, this procedure was unsuccessful.
Due to the loss of power and the resulting flight conditions, the pilot-in-command initiated an emergency landing procedure. While traveling at a speed of 140 km/h, the plane struck trees and came to rest in a forested area situated roughly 600 meters beyond the end of the runway. Although the impact resulted in the aircraft being destroyed, all 16 occupants were successfully rescued from the wreckage.
Findings
Investigations into the accident revealed that after the landing gear was retracted following liftoff, a malfunction occurred within the left engine. Because the crew could not successfully feather the propeller, it continued to windmill, which generated excessive drag and prevented the plane from maintaining altitude. A contributing factor noted in the report was that the onboard mechanic did not react immediately to the engine failure because his attention was directed toward monitoring instruments, specifically the airspeed indicator.
