What happened

During a nighttime anti-submarine warfare exercise operating out of RAF Ballykelly, an aircraft struck the terrain at Mt Beinn na Lice. The incident occurred under conditions of restricted visibility while the plane was in its cruise phase. The impact with the slope, situated approximately one mile northeast of the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse, caused the aircraft to disintegrate.

All nine members of the crew, belonging to the 36th Squadron, perished in the accident. There were no survivors recovered from the wreckage.
