What happened
During a night-time positioning flight from São Luis to Belém, a twin-engine aircraft was transporting two pilots, two passengers, and various bank documents. As the flight crew prepared for arrival at Belém-Val de Cans Airport, the aircraft encountered significant meteorological challenges, including heavy rain, cumulonimbus clouds, and intense turbulence. The visibility was notably restricted due to these adverse weather conditions.
While performing the final approach, the aircraft lost stability and became uncontrollable. The plane subsequently struck the ground on Ilha das Onças Island, situated approximately 5.5 km west of the threshold for runway 06. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. There were four fatalities recorded, as all occupants on board perished in the accident.
Findings
- The flight was operating in severe weather characterized by limited visibility and heavy precipitation.
- The presence of cumulonimbus clouds and severe turbulence contributed to the loss of control during the approach phase.
