What happened
During the final approach to Sapporo-Okadama, the aircraft was operating at an excessive speed and maintained an altitude that was too high on the glide path. Upon touchdown, the plane landed too far down the snow-covered runway, leaving insufficient distance to decelerate. Consequently, the aircraft overran the runway surface and collided with a snow bank before coming to a halt.
Findings
- The aircraft was descending on an incorrect glide path.
- The approach speed was higher than necessary for a safe landing.
- The presence of a snow-covered runway contributed to the inability to stop the aircraft within the available runway length.
All 41 occupants on board managed to evacuate the aircraft without any injuries. While there were no casualties, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
