Aircraft overrun at Ozuki Air Base

No fatalities • Ozuki AFB, Japan • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft conducting a training mission overran the runway at Ozuki Air Base, resulting in significant damage to the airframe but no injuries.

What happened

During a scheduled training flight originating from Atsugi AFB, an aircraft was performing a series of intermediate stops, including visits to Tokushima AFB and Ilocos AFB. Upon arriving at Ozuki Air Base, the aircraft touched down on runway 35, which has a total length of 1,200 meters. Following the landing, the pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft sufficiently before the end of the paved surface.

The aircraft continued past the runway threshold, breaching a perimeter fence. During the excursion, the nose landing gear was severed from the airframe. The aircraft eventually came to a halt in a nearby rice paddy, approximately 150 meters from the end of the runway.

Findings

  • All 11 occupants of the aircraft successfully evacuated the wreckage without injury.
  • The aircraft type sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
  • The primary factor in the accident was the inability to stop the aircraft within the available runway distance.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently to remain on the runway surface during landing.
