Incident Details
A four-engine seaplane departed from Iwakuni Air Force Base to carry out a training mission over the sea. The aircraft was crewed by 19 personnel from the 31st Squadron. For reasons that have not been determined, the crew was apparently forced to initiate an emergency landing. The aircraft subsequently crashed into the sea at a location approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Cape Ashizuri.
Rescue and Injuries
Following the crash, all 19 occupants were successfully rescued from the partially submerged aircraft. Four individuals were injured during the accident. The exact nature of their injuries was not specified.
Aircraft Damage
The seaplane lost one engine and one float during the crash sequence. The aircraft came to rest partially submerged in the water. It was assessed as damaged beyond repair.
