What happened
On June 7, 2019, while conducting a flight inspection of an Antonov An-2 aircraft with registration UR-KAU, the plane was operating approximately 6 to 7 kilometers northwest of Chayka airfield. During this phase of the operation, the aircraft suffered a sudden loss of engine power. Unable to maintain altitude or reach the aerodrome, the crew executed an emergency landing on a nearby lake. Upon impact with the water, the aircraft capsized.
The investigation
The National Bureau for Investigation of Civil Aviation Accidents (NBAAI) conducted an inquiry into the incident to determine the precise technical and operational causes behind the engine failure and the subsequent forced landing procedures.
Findings
The primary factor leading to the accident was the loss of engine power during the flight inspection. This mechanical or operational failure necessitated the immediate decision to land on water, which resulted in the capsizing of the Antonov An-2. Despite the significant damage to the airframe caused by the water impact and rollover, all three crew members onboard escaped without physical injury.
