Event Details
On 21 June 2025 at approximately 11:20 local time, a paraglider accident occurred near the Korija launch site close to Virovitica, Croatia. The pilot was flying a Nova Mentor 4 paraglider. The weather was clear with a light north wind of 1–2 m/s.
Flight Sequence
The pilot launched using a winch tow and released from the towline at about 300 m above ground. After release, the paraglider flew freely in the area, gradually losing altitude. After approximately ten minutes, at a height of about 100–150 m, the left side of the canopy experienced a lateral collapse. The canopy began to rotate left. Part of the canopy reopened, but an estimated 30% remained closed, possibly due to a line tangle ("kravata"). The paraglider continued rotating with a high descent rate. At a height of less than 100 m, the pilot deployed the reserve parachute.
Findings at the Scene
The reserve parachute was found on the ground, having been pulled from its container but with the canopy still bundled and lines secured by rubber bands. The main paraglider was undamaged and properly connected to the harness. The harness had minor fabric damage from the impact and some straps were cut by emergency medical personnel during assistance. The pilot's helmet showed no visible damage.
Investigation Results
The investigation determined the immediate cause of the accident was a lateral collapse of the paraglider canopy at a relatively low altitude. The pilot was unable to stabilize the paraglider or deploy the reserve parachite in time. No contributing factors were identified. The pilot, a male Croatian national, had more than ten years of paragliding experience but did not hold a pilot license. He was a member of the Virovitica Aero Club and frequently flew at the Korija site.

The Air Accident Investigation Agency issued general safety recommendations to paraglider pilots.
Probable Cause
The lateral collapse of the paraglider canopy at a relatively low altitude, combined with the pilot's inability to stabilize the paraglider or activate the reserve parachute in a timely manner.
