Facts
On 25 May 2024, a Cessna 182D aircraft, registration HA-TUB, operated by Aeroklub 'Tandem' under lease from AVIA-Rent Kft of Hungary, was engaged in parachute jumping operations at Lučko Airport (LDZL). The aircraft had completed several cycles of skydiver drops earlier that day, flown by two pilots who alternated duties. After refueling with 70 liters, the aircraft departed around 15:30 local time with four skydivers and one pilot on board.
Sequence of Events
Shortly after takeoff, during a climbing turn, the engine stopped. Due to the aircraft's position, low altitude, and the terrain below, a suitable emergency landing site was not available. The aircraft descended into a forested area near the village of Kerestinec, close to Lučko Airport. The impact resulted in one skydiver being fatally injured, while the remaining four occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The aircraft was destroyed, and no fire occurred.
After the crash, the injured individuals used a mobile phone to contact rescuers, aiding in locating the accident site. Search and rescue operations involved the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service, firefighters, police, Ministry of Defence personnel, and the Civil Protection Directorate.
Investigation Findings
The investigation revealed that the engine failure was caused by fuel exhaustion. The aircraft had operated multiple parachute jump cycles that day, and the last refueling added 70 liters. The safety investigation found no other contributing factors. The Croatian Air Accident Investigation Agency (AIN) conducted the inquiry and issued safety recommendations to Aeroklub 'Tandem', the operator of Lučko Airport, the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency, and the Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure.
Cause
The probable cause of the accident was engine failure due to fuel starvation.
