On March 3, 1945, a Noorduyn Norseman (registration CF-BXK) operated by Eldorado Mining & Refining Company was involved in an aviation accident near Great Slave Lake, Canada in flight. No fatalities were reported. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: Collision with an obstacle on touchdown during an emergency landing necessitated by heavy snowfall conditions. This summary draws on records from the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives (B3A).
A single-engine aircraft sustained significant damage after striking an obstacle on touchdown while attempting an emergency landing due to heavy snowfall. No injuries were reported, but the airframe was later declared irreparable.
What happened
During an enroute phase of flight, the pilot encountered heavy snow falls that necessitated a decision to execute an emergency landing. While on approach and subsequent touchdown, the single-engine aircraft struck an obstacle on the ground. The impact caused the airframe to come to rest in a damaged condition. Following the incident, there were no reports of injuries among those on board.
Findings
The aircraft was subsequently transported back to Noorduyn for assessment and repair efforts. Despite these attempts, the extent of the damage sustained during the collision with the obstacle led to the conclusion that the airframe could not be restored to airworthy condition. The aircraft was eventually declared irreparable.
