Aircraft overrun and fire at Kinshasa-Ndolo Airport

14 fatalities • Kinshasa-Ndolo, Democratic Republic of Congo • Takeoff (climb)

A cargo flight departing Kinshasa-Ndolo Airport experienced dual engine failure immediately after takeoff, resulting in a runway excursion, vehicle collisions, and multiple fatalities.

What happened

A cargo flight operating from Kinshasa-Ndolo Airport toward Tembo experienced a critical failure during its initial climb. The aircraft, which was transporting a shipment of diamonds and carrying 18 passengers along with three crew members, suffered a loss of power in both engines at an altitude of approximately one meter.

In response to the engine failure, the captain attempted an emergency landing back on the departure runway. During the aborted takeoff, the pilot applied emergency braking; however, the aircraft could not stop before the end of the runway. The aircraft overran the runway at high speed, veered into a nearby road, and collided with several vehicles. The impact caused the aircraft to roll and subsequently burst into flames.

Findings

The accident resulted in a total of 14 fatalities, consisting of six passengers on board and eight individuals on the ground. Several other occupants of the aircraft sustained injuries during the collision and subsequent fire.

Probable cause

The simultaneous loss of power in both engines immediately following takeoff led to an unsuccessful emergency landing attempt and a high-speed runway excursion.
