What happened
On 26th January 2024, a Challenger 601–3R, registered N580KR, was conducting a private flight from Abuja to Ibadan when it overran the runway at Ibadan Airport. The flight, operated by Mattini Airline Services Ltd., carried 15 people, including 3 crew members.
During the approach to Runway 22, the crew encountered a mechanical issue where the flap selector became stuck after being set to the 200 position. Following the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH) procedures, the crew increased their approach speed by 30 knots to compensate for the restricted flaps. As the aircraft crossed the runway threshold, the crew encountered a direct tailwind and ground effect, which caused the aircraft to float significantly down the runway.
The aircraft touched down well beyond the intended touchdown zone. During the landing roll, the aircraft veered to the right to avoid approach lights, causing the left-wing leading edge to strike an approach light, resulting in a dent and a broken light. The aircraft eventually exited the runway and traveled into the clearway, coming to a stop approximately 236 meters from the end of the runway.
The investigation
The NSIB investigation, which is ongoing, examined the aircraft's mechanical state and the flight crew's actions. Investigators reviewed the aircraft's maintenance records, including its Certificate of Airworthiness, and inspected the physical damage to the wing and the runway environment. The investigation also looked into the meteorological conditions at the time of the incident and the communication between the crew and Air Traffic Control (ATC).
