What happened
During a nighttime departure from runway 07 at Nairobi-Wilson Airport, an aircraft experienced engine-related difficulties during its initial climb. In response to these mechanical issues, the pilot declared an emergency and requested permission to divert to the nearby Nairobi-Jomo Kenyatta Airport.
While performing the approach to runway 06 at the diversion airport, the pilot attempted a maneuver to avoid contact with power cables. During this maneuver, the aircraft experienced a loss of control, resulting in a left roll. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a field situated approximately 4.5 km before reaching the runway. There were two fatalities among the occupants.
Findings
- The flight was operating in the initial climb phase when engine problems were first identified.
- Loss of control occurred during an attempt to avoid overhead power lines during the approach phase.
