What happened
On the evening of the accident, a single-engine aircraft was prepared for a private flight to Vilshofen, Bavaria, with a total of five people on board, including the pilot and four passengers. During the takeoff roll on runway 34 at Marina di Campo Airport, air traffic control alerted the pilot to visible smoke emanating from the aircraft. The pilot did not acknowledge this warning and proceeded with the takeoff.
After the aircraft became airborne under visual flight rules (VFR), it performed a right-hand turn followed by a left-hand turn. During this maneuver, the plane lost altitude and crashed into a vineyard situated approximately one kilometer north of the runway threshold. The impact resulted in three fatalities and two serious injuries among the occupants. Following the accident, the two survivors succumbed to their injuries over the subsequent two days.
Findings
- The aircraft was destroyed upon impact.
- The pilot failed to respond to air traffic control warnings regarding smoke emissions during the takeoff roll.
