Aircraft impact following takeoff at residential area

4 fatalities • South Lake Tahoe, United States of America • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced a steep bank and subsequent dive during a left downwind departure, resulting in a fatal impact and fire.

What happened

During a departure from the airport, the aircraft type initiated a left downwind maneuver. After climbing to an altitude of roughly 300 feet, the plane entered a steep bank and began a rapid descent. The aircraft's takeoff roll was significantly longer than standard performance charts suggested, reaching 4,850 feet before liftoff, compared to a predicted 2,100 feet. As the pilot attempted a crosswind turn, the bank angle increased toward 90 degrees, causing the nose to drop. The aircraft subsequently struck several trees before crashing into a backyard near a residence. The impact and subsequent fire resulted in the thermal destruction of the airframe.

Findings

Investigation into the wreckage revealed that the aircraft was operating at a weight at least 251 pounds over the maximum allowable gross takeoff weight. While the engine showed no discrepancies upon inspection, the cockpit instruments and autopilot components were lost to the fire. The landing gear and flaps were found in the retracted position. Notably, the electric elevator trim system was due for repairs one week prior to the accident, but the aircraft was operated before the maintenance was completed. Additionally, the aircraft featured various modifications, including a wing spoiler system, though the control linkages for this system were destroyed during the post-crash fire.

Probable cause

The aircraft was operated significantly above its maximum allowable gross takeoff weight during a departure maneuver.
