Aircraft excursion and crash during takeoff

No fatalities • Wellington Aero Club, United States of America • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft veered off the runway during its takeoff roll, resulting in a collision with trees and a subsequent stall and crash.

What happened

During the takeoff roll, the aircraft began to veer toward the left side of the runway, heading toward a large ditch located near the airfield. According to eyewitness accounts, the pilot did not initiate an aborted takeoff or attempt to stop the plane before it reached the edge of the ditch. As the aircraft reached the perimeter of the ditch, it rotated and climbed to an approximate altitude of 50 feet. During this ascent, the left wing struck several trees. The aircraft then underwent a series of rolls, moving from left to right, before ultimately stalling and crashing.

Findings

Investigations into the incident revealed that the pilot experienced a leftward pull during the takeoff phase. The pilot noted that he was unaware of his exact position on the runway at the time of the excursion and suggested that a right quartering tailwind may have contributed to the directional deviation. A mechanical inspection of the engine and the airframe found no evidence of malfunctions or pre-impact anomalies that would have prevented the aircraft from operating normally.

Probable cause

The pilot's loss of directional control during the takeoff roll, potentially influenced by a right quartering tailwind and lack of runway position awareness.
