Single-engine aircraft crash near airport runway

1 fatality • Greater Cumberland, United States of America • Landing (descent or approach)

A solo pilot was killed when their aircraft entered a descent and struck the ground near the approach end of a runway following a steep turn.

What happened

While performing an approach to the airport, the pilot communicated with the airport unicom operator to request increased brightness for the runway lights. The aircraft was observed following a localizer approach toward runway 23. During the approach, witnesses noted the aircraft flying through low-hanging cloud cover at an altitude of approximately 400 to 500 feet above ground level.

After passing over the airport, the aircraft executed a sharp left turn. Following a 90-degree rotation, the plane began a shallow descent. The aircraft leveled its wings out of the turn but subsequently impacted the terrain roughly 0.25 miles from the approach end of runway 28. The pilot, who was the only person on board, was killed in the accident.

Findings

An inspection of the aircraft revealed no signs of mechanical failure or engine malfunction during the flight. Additionally, medical examinations of the pilot showed no evidence of impairment or sudden incapacitation. Witnesses reported hearing the engine operating continuously throughout the final descent, and the steep left turn was the primary maneuver noted prior to the impact.

Probable cause

The aircraft entered a shallow descent and struck the ground following a steep turn during the approach phase.
