Aircraft accident near Ust-Nem Airport

15 fatalities • Ust-Nem, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft crashed into a wooded area shortly after takeoff from Ust-Nem Airport following an engine failure, resulting in 15 fatalities.

What happened

During the initial climb phase from Ust-Nem Airport, an aircraft experienced a mechanical failure involving the left engine. At an altitude of approximately 30 metres, the engine ceased functioning and the propeller entered an autofeather state.

Following this failure, the crew performed the retraction of the flaps. During this period, the aircraft experienced a left-side roll and transitioned into a high angle of attack. The flight path led the plane into a forested region situated roughly 500 metres from the runway. Upon impact with the trees, the aircraft caught fire.

Of the 16 people on board, there were 15 fatalities and one reported injury.

Findings

  • The primary sequence of events began with the failure of the left engine and subsequent propeller autofeathering during the climb.
  • The loss of power led to a loss of control characterized by a roll and an increased angle of attack.

Probable cause

The failure of the left engine during the takeoff climb led to a loss of control and subsequent impact with trees.
