Engine failure leads to fatal crash near Krasnodar

1 fatality • Vostochnaya, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

An agricultural aircraft crashed into Bakhotinski Lake during a climb following a recent engine repair, resulting in one fatality.

What happened

On 23 March, an agricultural aircraft was conducting crop spraying operations over a field in Vostochnaya, located approximately 70 km northeast of Krasnodar. This flight followed an incident the previous day, during which the aircraft experienced an engine failure that necessitated a forced landing in a nearby field. Following that event, the crew replaced a broken carburetor and conducted a successful engine test run.

During the flight on 23 March, the aircraft experienced a second engine failure just one minute after takeoff. While the aircraft was climbing to an altitude of 30 metres, the loss of power led to a stall. The crew attempted an emergency landing, but the aircraft struck the surface of Bakhotinski Lake and came to rest in an inverted position. The accident resulted in one fatality and one injury.

Findings

  • The aircraft experienced a secondary engine failure shortly after takeoff.
  • The impact occurred during the initial climb phase.
  • The pilot in command was killed in the accident, while the co-pilot sustained minor injuries.

Probable cause

A recurring engine failure occurred during the climb phase, leading to an aerodynamic stall and subsequent impact with the water.
