What happened
On 16 April 2006, a Robinson R44, registration G-MAMK, was conducting a private flight from Liverpool toward a landing site near the Holt Lodge Inn in Llan-y-pwll, Wrexham. The weather conditions at the time were favorable, characterized by good visibility and a light breeze of approximately 10 knots.
The pilot performed an orbital maneuver around the intended landing area before initiating a downwind approach, as determined by the windsock at the site. While the pilot successfully transitioned into a hover, the landing itself was heavy. In an attempt to correct the descent, the pilot raised the collective lever. During this maneuver, the pilot lost control of the aircraft in yaw, causing the helicopter to tip onto its right side. All four occupants, including the pilot and three passengers, were able to exit the aircraft without sustaining any injuries.
The investigation
The AAIB investigation involved an analysis of photographs taken immediately following the accident and detailed interviews with the pilot. Investigators also considered input from a flying instructor with significant experience on the R44 type. The examination focused on the sequence of control inputs following the initial heavy touchdown and the aerodynamic state of the aircraft during the landing phase.
