What happened
During the final approach phase toward Joaçaba-Santa Terezinha Airport, a twin engine airplane collided with a hill situated approximately 7 km from the airfield. The impact occurred while the aircraft was descending toward its destination.
The accident resulted in a total of five fatalities and one person sustained serious injuries. Among those who perished were two members of the crew and three passengers. One nine-year-old passenger survived the crash but suffered significant injuries.
Findings
Investigations into the event indicate that the crew did not recognize that the aircraft had descended to an altitude that was too low for the terrain. The failure to maintain safe altitude during the approach led directly to the collision with the hillside.
