Synopsis
On 22 July 2005, at approximately 0830Z, a Cessna C172 aircraft, registration ZS-MYS, was involved in an incident during a solo training flight. The aircraft was operating out of Wonderboom Aerodrome (FAWB) and had one student pilot on board. No injuries were sustained.
Sequence of Events
The student pilot departed from Wonderboom Aerodrome for a solo training flight to the Pretoria general flying area (no. 1). After returning to Wonderboom Aerodrome, the student prepared to land on Runway 29. During the short final approach, the student encountered wind shear. The student had applied 20° of flap. The wind shear caused the right wing to drop, and the student over-compensated with left rudder input. This caused the aircraft to move left and depart the runway, where the propeller made contact with the ground.
Weather Conditions
The weather at the time was fine with good visibility.
Damage
The aircraft sustained propeller damage as a result of contacting the ground.
Probable Cause
The student pilot used incorrect technique to counter the effects of wind shear.
