Incident Details
On December 16, 2013, at 1500Z, a Cessna 172L aircraft, registration ZS-PXH, was on a private flight from Pilanesburg International Airport (FAPN) to Lanseria International Airport (FALA). During the approach for landing on Runway 07, the pilot reported that the aircraft was configured with full flaps, an airspeed of 75 knots indicated airspeed, and a power setting of 2100 RPM. At approximately 400 meters from the threshold, the aircraft's undercarriage collided with the approach lighting system. The pilot continued the landing, touching down on the runway. The aircraft veered to the left of the runway for about 5 meters before the pilot regained control and taxied to the hangar. The air traffic controller observed the veering and activated rescue assistance, with fire vehicles responding.

The aircraft was a Cessna 172L, serial number 172-59426, manufactured in 1970, with total airframe hours of 7733.51 at the time of the incident. It was powered by a Lycoming O-320-E20 engine. The pilot, aged 37, held a valid Private Pilot License (PPL) with 112.4 total flying hours, all on type. The pilot was accompanied by two passengers.

Damage
The aircraft sustained minor damage to the propeller, horizontal stabilizer, and gear struts. The approach lighting system suffered damage, with four approach lights and two runway threshold lights broken. Airport traffic was not affected.
Probable Cause
The pilot undershot the runway, causing the aircraft to impact the approach and runway lights. A contributory factor was landing and poor technique.
