Jabiru J430 sustains substantial damage during takeoff at Zuikerkop Lodge

Casualties unknown • Runway 09 at Zuikerkop Lodge Airstrip near Clocolan, Free State, ZA

A private flight in the Free State ended in an aircraft excursion after the pilot failed to counteract engine torque during the takeoff roll.

What happened

On the morning of 20 December 2024, a Jabiru J430 with registration ZU-JBU was attempting a takeoff from the gravel Runway 09 at Zuikerkop Lodge Airstrip near Clocolan, Free State. The flight was being conducted under visual meteorological conditions as a private operation.

After completing a pre-flight inspection and confirming the aircraft was within weight limits, the pilot commenced the takeoff roll on the 900-metre runway. As the aircraft reached a ground speed of approximately 55 knots and the nose wheel began to lift, the aircraft drifted toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft impacted the rough ground roughly 250 metres from the runway threshold. The impact caused the nose wheel to break off and the propeller to strike the ground, while horizontal forces damaged both main landing gear struts. Despite the substantial damage to the aircraft, there were no injuries to the pilot or the two passengers on board.

The investigation

SACAA AIID examined the circumstances of the excursion, including the aircraft's maintenance status and the pilot's experience. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft had recently undergone its annual inspection in December 2024 and was within its airworthiness limits. The pilot held a valid Private Pilot Licence and was appropriately rated for the aircraft type.

Investigators also reviewed the environmental conditions, noting a light north wind of approximately 8 knots and clear skies. The aircraft's weight was verified to be 715kg, which was 45kg below the maximum takeoff weight of 760kg. The investigation focused on the mechanical and aerodynamic factors present during the takeoff roll on the gravel surface.

Probable cause

The loss of directional control during takeoff due to insufficient compensation for engine torque reaction.
