What happened

On 18 June 2005, a Beech 58, registration ZS-MBT, departed from Wonderboom Aerodrome in Gauteng for a flight to a private farm near Vivo, Limpopo. The flight, carrying the pilot and three child passengers, proceeded without incident for roughly 55 minutes. Upon arriving over the destination, the pilot flew over the intended hangar and runway, continuing for approximately 2 nm before initiating a turn to land.

During the landing sequence, the pilot deployed 25° flaps at an indicated airspeed of about 65 mph and communicated intentions via radio. While the initial touchdown was smooth, the aircraft encountered a hump on the surface as the ground roll speed dropped to 40 mph. This bump catapulted the aircraft back into the air, leading to a loss of directional control. The aircraft struck the ground on its nose wheel and left wing, subsequently ground looping into a steel boundary pole of an electrified fence. Following the impact, the pilot realized the aircraft had landed on a gravel road that had been mistaken for the inspected farm runway.

The investigation

Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the landing and the pilot's prior reconnaissance of the site. It was established that several days earlier, the pilot had visited the farm at night to inspect the suitability of the private runway. During that visit, the pilot and others used floodlights to check the runway length and surface, noting the presence of a nearby hangar, windsock, and buildings.

Technical records indicated that the aircraft's last mandatory periodic inspection had been completed on 09 June 2005. At the time of the accident, the airframe had accumulated 4,387.7 total hours, meaning only 9.7 hours had elapsed since the last inspection.
