Flight SNC2917 crash during go-around at Oshawa Municipal Airport

No fatalities • Oshawa, Canada • Landing (descent or approach)

A Short Brothers SD3-60 cargo aircraft crashed into terrain and trees following a rejected landing at Oshawa Municipal Airport.

What happened

On a scheduled cargo charter from Toledo, Ohio, to Oshawa, Ontario, a Short Brothers SD3-60 operated by Air Cargo Carriers, Inc. was performing an instrument flight rules approach at night. The aircraft, registered as N748CC, touched down on the snow-covered Runway 30 at approximately 2000 EST. During the landing roll, the flight crew experienced inadequate braking performance and observed the runway end lights approaching, prompting the pilot to initiate a go-around procedure.

As the aircraft climbed to depart the runway, it began to lose altitude while passing over low-lying ground. The aircraft subsequently collided with an airport boundary fence before striking rising terrain and a line of trees, where the impact brought the plane to a halt. There was no fire following the collision. The two pilots on board survived the impact but suffered serious injuries. They were able to exit the wreckage and wait for emergency responders to arrive.

Findings

  • The landing was aborted due to poor braking action on the snow-covered runway.
  • The aircraft's descent into terrain occurred during the transition from the landing roll to the go-around phase.

Probable cause

The aircraft struck terrain and trees after a go-around was initiated due to slippery runway conditions.
