History of the Flight
On 5 June 2022, Aero Nomad flight ANK4506, an Airbus A320-233 aircraft registered EX-32009, was operating a scheduled passenger flight from Islamabad International Airport (OPIS), Pakistan, to Manas International Airport (UCFM), Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The flight followed Air Traffic Services (ATS) route ISB-KALMI-J143-PS-P500. Meanwhile, British Airways flight BAW2261, a Boeing 777-236ER aircraft registered GYMMD, was operating a scheduled passenger flight from Heathrow Airport (EGLL), London, UK, to Islamabad International Airport (OPIS). Its route was P500-PS-J143-KALMI-ISB.
When ANK4506 was approximately 5 nautical miles north of the Peshawar (PS) VOR, climbing from flight level 318 to flight level 320 with a rate of climb of 1,100 feet per minute, it encountered a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System Resolution Advisory (TCAS-RA) with reciprocal traffic BAW2261. BAW2261 was descending from flight level 390 to flight level 330, passing flight level 332 with a rate of descent of 1,600 feet per minute at the time of the incident.
Aircraft Information
ANK4506 was an Airbus A320-233 (manufacturer serial number 0916, year of manufacture 1998) operated by Aero Nomad Airlines, powered by IAE V2527-A5 engines. BAW2261 was a Boeing 777-236ER (manufacturer serial number 30305, year of manufacture 2000) operated by British Airways, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 895 engines.
Injuries and Damage
No injuries were reported among the 7 crew and 51 passengers on ANK4506, nor among the 10 crew and 148 passengers on BAW2261. No damage was reported to either aircraft.
Air Traffic Control and Separation
Both aircraft had received traffic information regarding each other. ANK4506 descended from flight level 318 to flight level 315 in response to the TCAS-RA. BAW2261 did not report a TCAS-RA but followed the TCAS-RA command to level off at flight level 330. At the time of the incident, 1,400 feet vertical separation and 5 nautical miles horizontal separation existed between the two aircraft. Standard separation was not infringed.
Outcome
Both aircraft continued to their destinations without any further incident. The event was classified as a serious incident and investigated by the Bureau of Aircraft Safety Investigation (BASI) of Pakistan.
