A mid-air collision occurred between a Cessna 182Q and an AutoGyro Calidus during low-level maneuvers near the Malé Bielice thermal baths.

What happened

On June 26, 2022, at 09:48 UTC, a mid-air collision occurred within the aerodrome traffic zone (ATZ) of Partizánske (LZPT) involving a Cessna 182Q, registration OM-KGB, and an AutoGyro Calidus 914 gyrocopter, registration OM-S002.

The pilot of the Cessna 182Q was conducting a flight from Prievidza (LZPE) to Partizánske (LZPT) with passengers on board. While approaching the area, the pilot tuned to the LZPT frequency and learned of the presence of another aircraft. The pilot intended to perform a low-level pass over the Malé Bielice thermal baths, which are located in front of runway 25.

Simultaneously, the pilot of the AutoGyro Calidus 914 was performing a landing pattern at LZPT. After communicating with the Cessna 182Q pilot, the gyrocopter pilot attempted to clear the airspace by turning right toward Bánovce nad Bebravou. During this maneuver, the propeller blades of the OM-S002 struck the right wing of the OM-KGB.

The collision caused significant damage to the gyrocopter, including the loss of one propeller blade and damage to the engine cowling. The pilot of the OM-S002 performed an emergency landing in a field, where the aircraft remained controllable. The Cessna 182Q continued its flight and landed safely at LZPT. There were no injuries to any occupants.
