Engine failure during initial climb at Budel-Kempen Airport

No fatalities • Budel-Kempen, Netherlands • Takeoff (climb)

A single-engine aircraft experienced an engine failure during its departure from Budel-Kempen Airport, resulting in a crash landing in a nearby field.

What happened

An aircraft departed from Budel-Kempen Airport, bound for Cannes-Mandelieu, with a total of five people on board, including the pilot and four passengers. Shortly after takeoff, while the aircraft was in its initial climb phase, the pilot initiated the retraction of the landing gear and was in the process of retracting the flaps when the engine ceased functioning.

Following the loss of power, the aircraft was unable to maintain its altitude and descended into an open field. The plane came to a stop on its belly approximately 1,500 metres past the end of the runway. Although the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, all five occupants managed to exit the wreckage without any injuries.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the descent was an engine failure occurring during the transition from takeoff to climb.
  • The incident occurred while the crew was actively configuring the aircraft for climb by retracting the landing gear and flaps.

Probable cause

The engine failed during the initial climb phase while the pilot was retracting the landing gear and flaps.
