What happened
On September 20, 1986, a privately licensed pilot attempted to operate a light aircraft from the Kägiswil aerodrome in Switzerland. After initially canceling a flight reservation due to poor weather conditions, the pilot returned approximately thirty minutes later to conduct local circuit training in a Robin DR400-160D, registration HB-KBE.
The aircraft departed on runway 03 at 14:43 local time. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot transmitted blind reports indicating entry into the downwind leg of the traffic pattern. Witnesses observed the aircraft flying unusually low near a forested slope approximately 2.3 kilometers northwest of the airfield. The plane collided with treetops on a steep incline, crashed, and ignited.
The accident site was located at an elevation of 990 meters (3,250 feet). The fuselage and engine were destroyed by fire, fueled by approximately 120 to 140 liters of aviation fuel. The pilot sustained fatal injuries and did not survive the impact or subsequent fire.
The investigation
Swiss authorities investigated the incident to determine causal factors for safety prevention. The weather at the time was characterized by a high-pressure system with significant stratocumulus fog layers. Visibility below the cloud base ranged from 2 to 6 kilometers, deteriorating significantly near the terrain. Wind conditions were light and variable.
Forensic analysis of the pilot revealed no evidence of alcohol influence or pre-existing cardiovascular conditions that could have caused incapacitation. The aircraft was airworthy, having undergone recent maintenance checks, with weight and balance within permissible limits. Other pilots in the vicinity reported similar difficulties maintaining visual reference due to fog banks in the downwind area.
Findings
The investigation concluded that the primary cause of the accident was loss of orientation in fog. The pilot likely became disoriented while flying at low altitude in deteriorating visibility conditions. The aircraft entered a cloud layer without visual reference, leading to spatial disorientation. Consequently, the pilot failed to maintain controlled flight and collided with terrain.
