What happened
On August 26, 2018, at approximately 23:00 local time, an Airbus A320-214, registered as HB-IJP, was performing a scheduled commercial flight from Zurich to Nice. While the aircraft was executing its final approach to runway 04L at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, the captain experienced a sudden medical emergency that resulted in medical incapacitation.
During the descent, the flight crew consisted of a Swiss captain and a German co-pilot. Following the captain's sudden inability to continue flight duties, the co-pilot took control of the aircraft to manage the remaining approach and landing sequence. The aircraft landed safely on runway 04L without any damage to the airframe or injuries to the 166 passengers on board.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) initiated an inquiry into the event to determine the circumstances surrounding the captain's medical condition and the subsequent handling of the aircraft during the emergency approach.
