What happened
On December 6, 2024, a Maule M-5-210C, registration TG-SES, was conducting a flight in the vicinity of Guatemala City when it impacted a cliffside in the southern area of Colonia Santa Fe, Zona 13. The aircraft was operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) in favorable weather conditions, characterized by unlimited horizontal visibility and light winds. During the flight, the pilot ceased all radio communications with the Guatemala Radio tower. Another pilot observed the aircraft in flight but reported it to the tower after it disappeared from view.
Despite the impact with the terrain, the pilot and the three passengers survived the accident, though all four occupants sustained minor injuries. Local emergency services and firefighters provided immediate assistance at the scene, and no post-crash fire occurred.
The investigation
The investigation conducted by the DGAC/UIA focused on the aircraft's mechanical state, the fuel system, and the crew's operational procedures. Investigators examined the wreckage and found that the aircraft's maintenance records were up to date and the airframe, engine, and propeller were within their service limits.
Upon inspecting the fuel system, investigators found that there was no fuel remaining in the tanks and identified a lack of fuel within the main filter. While the aircraft's systems were otherwise functional, the investigation noted that the occupants' injuries were exacerbated by the incorrect use of seatbelts during the impact.
