What happened

On January 7, 2021, at approximately 14:30, a Flight Design CTLSi ultra-light aircraft, registration AJ2199, crashed in the mountainous region of Sandimen Township, Pingtung. The aircraft, operated by the Kai-Xiang Aviation Sports Promotion Association, was conducting a 20-minute recreational flight with a pilot and one passenger. The flight departed from the Jiao-Hao activity site, intending to fly toward the Sandimen Bridge before returning.

During the flight, the aircraft became lost to radio contact approximately ten minutes after departure. Due to deteriorating weather conditions and the lack of real-tme tracking, search and rescue teams did not locate the wreckage until approximately 22:00 that evening. The impact occurred on a steep 70-degree slope, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft and two fatalities.
