Aircraft crash near Ivanovo-Yuzhny Airport

84 fatalities • Ivanovo-Yuzhny, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft flying from Mineralnye Vody to Ivanovo crashed during its final approach, resulting in the deaths of all 84 people on board.

What happened

A scheduled flight traveling from Mineralnye Vody to Ivanovo, with a planned stop in Donetsk, crashed while attempting to land at Ivanovo-Yuzhny Airport. The flight was operating at night under conditions of low visibility caused by adverse weather.

During the final approach phase, the aircraft drifted from the established glide path. Although the navigator and co-pilot attempted to alert the captain regarding the deviation from the correct flight path, these communications were unsuccessful. The captain maintained the approach while the aircraft was in an incorrect configuration. While traveling at a speed of 370 km/h and descending at 6 metres per second, the left wing collided with a residential structure.

Following the impact with the building, the aircraft pitched into a nose-down position and traveled an additional 512 metres before crashing approximately 2,450 metres short of runway 29. The impact caused a post-crash fire that resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were 84 fatalities among the occupants of the aircraft.

Findings

Investigations into the accident indicate that the captain failed to respond to warnings regarding a glide path deviation, leading the aircraft to fly in an improper configuration during the approach.

Probable cause

The captain's failure to correct a flight path deviation despite alerts from the crew led to a collision with a building during the final approach.
