What happened

Shortly after departing from runway 29R at Tehran-Mehrabad Airport, a Tupolev Tu-154 was in its climbing phase when it struck an Iranian Air Force Su-24MK fighter jet. At the time of the collision, the fighter aircraft was positioned on runway 29L, preparing for its landing approach.

Following the impact, both aircraft lost control and entered an uncontrolled descent. The wreckage of both planes crashed into a military depot situated approximately 15 km away from the airport. The accident resulted in 131 fatalities on the Tupolev aircraft, along with the deaths of both pilots aboard the fighter jet.
