What happened
On April 26, 2009, an Antonov An-2, registration OK-JID, was performing a ferry flight from Olomouc (LKOL) to Zábřeh (LKZA) with a crew of two. Upon arrival at Zábřeh, the pilot conducted at least one low approach to determine the precise wind direction. The wind was observed to be from 160°, creating a 60° angle relative to the runway centerline.
To maximize the headwind component, the pilot attempted a landing aligned with the wind. During the approach, maintained at speeds between 120 and 140 km/h, the aircraft overshot the intended touchdown point. Despite applying braking after touchdown, the pilot was unable to stop the aircraft before it exited the paved surface. As the aircraft entered the soft terrain approximately 50 meters south of the runway, the nose pitched forward, causing the propeller and the left portions of both wings to strike the ground. The aircraft subsequently settled back onto its main landing gear.
There were no injuries to the two crew members, though the aircraft sustained damage to the propeller and the left sides of both wings.
The investigation
The ÚZPLN investigation examined the flight sequence, the meteorological conditions, and the pilot's decision-making. The investigation confirmed that the weather conditions were within operational limits, though the pilot noted significant turbulence caused by terrain south of the airport. The investigation also verified that the pilot held valid licenses and medical certification, and that the aircraft possessed a valid Certificate of Airworthiness.
