What happened
On August 2, 2004, at approximately 11:05 UTC, a Piper PA-23-250, registration OK-EKU, was performing a final approach to runway 24 at Praha Kbely airport (LKKB). While the pilot was tuning radio frequencies and conducting an in-flight cockpit check, an impact was noted against the aircraft's windshield.
Following the impact, the pilot performed a visual inspection of the exterior. Finding no immediate operational issues and noting that the aircraft continued to handle normally, the pilot proceeded with the flight and completed the landing at the aerodrome without further incident. Upon post-flight inspection, cracks were discovered on the left side of the acrylic windshield, measuring approximately 320 x 140 mm. No other damage to the aircraft or injuries to the crew were reported.
The investigation
The ÚZPLN investigation focused on determining the source of the impact and the extent of the damage. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held a valid commercial pilot license and a Class 1 medical certificate. The aircraft was found to be airworthy, and the airport conditions were not a contributing factor to the event. The investigation examined the physical damage to the acrylic glazing and the sequence of cockpit actions during the approach.
