What happened
During the landing phase on runway 23, a four-engine airplane touched down with excessive speed and beyond the intended touchdown point. Upon making contact with the runway, the crew initiated standard braking maneuvers; however, the captain determined that the remaining runway length was insufficient to bring the aircraft to a complete stop. To avoid an overrun of the runway perimeter, the pilot steered the aircraft toward the right side of the pavement.
As the aircraft exited the runway, the right main landing gear sank into soft terrain. This movement caused the right wing to make contact with the ground, subsequently impacting both the number 3 and number 4 engines. The impact resulted in substantial structural damage to the right-side propulsion units and the wing assembly.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained heavy damage to its right wing and engines.
- The incident resulted in zero injuries to those on board.
- The aircraft was ultimately declared a total loss, as the damage was deemed beyond repair.
