Triple engine failure and crash near Vanavara Airport

28 fatalities • Vanavara, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft flying from Krasnoyarsk crashed near the Chamba river after experiencing a simultaneous loss of all three engines during its descent.

What happened

During a flight originating from Krasnoyarsk, the crew attempted to land at Tura Airport but encountered degraded visibility and adverse weather. After failing to establish visual contact with the runway, the crew performed a go-around and entered a holding pattern. Subsequent attempts to land at Tura were unsuccessful, leading the crew to divert to Van avara Airport, situated approximately 450 km southeast of their original destination.

After a total flight duration of 3 hours and 45 minutes, the aircraft began its descent toward Vanavara. During this phase, all three engines ceased operation at the same time. In an effort to manage the emergency, the pilot attempted to perform an emergency landing in a cleared area. However, the aircraft impacted trees while traveling at 235 km/h. The plane subsequently lost control and crashed upside down on the banks of the Chamba river. The wreckage was located 41 km north-northwest of Vanavara.

Findings

  • The accident resulted in 28 fatalities.
  • The primary factor in the loss of control was the simultaneous failure of all three engines during the descent.

Probable cause

The simultaneous failure of all three engines during the descent prevented a controlled landing.
